How do I get rid of an old sofa in Kent?

You have four realistic options. You can donate it, but only if it has its fire safety label and is in good condition. You can book your council’s bulky collection, which is kerbside only: Swale charges £34.70 for up to four items plus £6 for upholstered seating. You can take it to a Kent tip yourself if it fits in your car. Or you can pay a licensed collector to take it from inside your home. Since 2023, sofas can’t go to landfill: they have to be incinerated because of persistent organic pollutants (POPs).

Why sofas need special disposal

Most older sofas and armchairs contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the foam and fabric, usually from flame retardants. The Environment Agency’s guidance, enforced since 1 January 2023, says waste upholstered seating:

  • can’t go to landfill
  • can’t be shredded and mixed with other waste
  • must be incinerated or used as fuel

This covers sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, kitchen and dining chairs with padded seats, office chairs, footstools and bean bags. It’s why councils charge extra for upholstered items. We keep upholstered seating separate from the moment it goes on the van, and the disposal is included in your quote.
